Happening in Edmonton: August 26-28

Blog by Sara Kalke | August 25th, 2016

The crispness of the morning air this week reminds me that summer can’t last forever. This is the last weekend before school starts for our kids. Let’s make the most of it!

Celebrate Summer

The John Janzen Nature Centre celebrates their 40 th Anniversary with family-friendly activities running all day on Sunday.

Listen to beautiful music in Hawrelak Park’s amphitheatre this weekend with Symphony Under the Sky.  Musical style ranges from classical to Hollywood hits, in four unique performances running from Thursday to Sunday.

Take the short drive out to the Devonian Botanical Garden on Sunday for The Great Big Family Picnic. There will be games, crafts, and other activities to help your family enjoy the beauty of nature. Pack a picnic to enjoy in the garden, or purchase food at the Patio Café.

Other Events:

On Sunday, you can immerse yourself in Italian culture at VIVE (Viva Italia Viva Edmonton) in Giovani Caboto Park. The festival includes cooking demonstrations, food vendors, a wine and cheese tent, an Italian car show, soccer and bocce tournaments, and even a meatball-eating contest. Fireworks finish things off at 9:30 PM.

Twenty-five years ago, Ukraine declared independence, and Ukrainian-Canadians are celebrating at Sir Winston Churchill Square on Sunday. Running from 1:00 PM until 10:00 PM, the free event features performances, guest speakers, children’s activities, food vendors, and more, all celebrating Ukraine’s culture.

Unscheduled Fun:

Only a short trek to the west of the city, The Edmonton Corn Maze should be at its peak right about now. Last year, we went very late in the season, and while it was still fun to let our kids chase each other through the maze, it was a bit past its prime. The maze is open until October 23, but the hours are reduced after September 5. There are also other activities available, such as a large jumping pillow, pedal carts, and farm animals.

What I’m Doing This Weekend:

We have a few options this weekend for things to do. My husband is playing in a softball tournament, so we may watch a game or two. Or we may head out to the corn maze ourselves for his work’s annual BBQ.
