Happening in Edmonton: August 5-7

Blog by Sara Kalke | August 3rd, 2016

Music is as much part of summer as is sunshine, fresh air, and rainstorms. It contributes to mood and

atmosphere. One of the best ways to enjoy summer music is outdoors.

Music of Summer

The Edmonton Folk Music Festival is this weekend. The annual event runs from Thursday to

Sunday, and has a die-hard fan base here in the city. There are limited tickets available, so if you

want to hear a diverse variety of music and enjoy the friendly crowds that converge on

Gallagher Hill, you should act quickly!

The Cariwest Great Parade brings vibrant music and dance to the street on Saturday. Starting at

noon, the parade begins at 99 th street and 108 th avenue, ending at Sir Winston Churchill Square.

Cariwest also features several other events this weekend that will celebrate Carribean culture

with food, drinks, and live music.

Other Events:

The Telus World of Science is featuring The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes this

summer. Running until September 5 th, the event features artifacts, puzzles, activities, and a case

to solve.

Unscheduled Fun:

To me, the month of August means raspberries. For the past several years, I’ve gathered friends

and kids and spent a day picking raspberries at Horse Hill Berry Farm. I love the wide grassy

aisles between the rows of thorny raspberry canes, the big, wide-open sky, and the picturesque

red building in which we pay for our haul. We bring a lunch and let the kids roam. Back at

home, possibly a little sunburnt, we eat our fill of the juicy berries, then I turn the rest into

freezer jam to be enjoyed all year.

What I’m Doing This Weekend:

My husband and I have our annual date at the Edmonton Folk Fest on Sunday. Every year we

drop the kids off with family and spend a day discovering new music and, if we’re lucky, enjoying

an old favourite. This year we’re especially looking forward to seeing The Head and the Heart.
