Happening in Edmonton: July 9-10

Blog by Sara Kalke | July 8th, 2016

In our family, the kids’ soccer season just ended, with much relief felt by Mom and Dad. While we love having our kids be active and play soccer, it makes for a busy May and June! We will enjoy our break…until hockey season starts! If you’d rather watch than play, there are plenty of options in Edmonton this weekend.

Sports Games and Events

Speaking of soccer, FC Edmonton plays the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Sunday. If baseball is more your speed, check out the Prospects as they play four home games this weekend. Or you can cheer on the Eskimos on Friday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Canadian Track & Field Championships are on from July 7-10 at Foote Field, and should be
exciting to watch during the run up to this summer’s Olympics in Rio.

If you just can’t get enough of hockey, even in the summer, head over to West Edmonton Mall’s Ice Palace for The Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament. You could be watching future NHL stars.

Other Events:

Whyte Ave is bustling again this weekend, with the Whyte Ave Art Walk. Hundreds of artists will be on hand showing and selling their work and you may even be able to see them in action.

Downtown you’ll find the Edmonton International Street Performers festival, with a variety of unique performances.

Unscheduled Fun:

It’s strawberry season, and the Edmonton area has several great u-pick options. Gather your family and friends and make a day of it. Celebrate your haul with fresh sliced strawberries and cream. Or mix some sour cream and brown sugar for a delicious fruit dip that pairs perfectly with freshly picked strawberries.

What I’m Doing This Weekend:

This weekend we are travelling across the country to spend time with family. From what I hear, they already have several activities planned for our visit, which may or may not involve a pirate ship.
